The founder of Farmers Republic, Dimitris Koutsolioutsos started in 2012 by introducing the online platform www.gineagrotis.gr (meaning ‘become a farmer’), a community supported agriculture service allowing city dwellers to ‘rent’ a patch of land from a farmer, tell the farmer what they would like to have grown on it and get their own fresh vegetables delivered to them weekly. Its success led to the first physical and virtual Farmers Republic organic food store, which opened in February 2014 and started offering next day delivery within the E.U. in May, due to popular demand.
Farmers Republic organic food market works as a liaison between farmers and consumers, with emphasis on required certifications and quality controls. Consumers benefit from being certain about the provenance and quality of the products they get, and from enjoying convenient shopping at a neat food store or ordering online and have everything delivered to their door. Producers have even more to gain, as they can take advantage of counselling, marketing and logistics, which can strengthen their presence in the market and also boost their productivity.
Farmers Republic collaborates with more than 300 producers from all over Greece. The ground floor of the store at Nea Erythraia is dedicated to fresh fruit and vegetables, while there are also organic meat and fish corners. At the basement one can find a variety of groceries, including even organic laundry detergents.
Apart from new stores in Greece, two in Athens and one in Thessaloniki, 2015 will see the opening of the first Farmers Republic organic food market outside the E.U., in Geneva, Switzerland. In October 2014, Farmers Republic joined the global network of Endeavor, an international non-profit organisation, which selects and supports the most promising companies around the world with the help of prominent business leaders and investors globally.
