The 70o Festival d’Avignon with Olivier Py as its artistic director this year focuses on women
Τhe 70th annual Festival of Avignon will take place from 6 to 24 June. The most important international institution for the performing arts, this year focuses on politics and emphasizes on artists from the Middle East and female creators .
“How are we to live when politics is hopeless, disregarding the future? How are we to live when ideas have no value and the social whole is torn, scared, silent? When the revolution is impossible, there remains the theater”, wonders artistic director Olivier Py.More political than ever, this year the festival focuses on creators from the Middle East while simultaneously manages female creators to cover one third of the total program. A significant number of performances addresses the issue of political incapacity and the rise of populism and nationalism while this year’s poster of the festival, created by the Franco-Algerian artist Adel Abdessemed, depicts a horse in orange background at the moment it manages to break free from it’s shackles .
The festival will open with the performance of “The Cursed” by Flemish Ivo van Hove. Artistic director Olivier Py will present a version of Aeschylus’ “Prometheus Bound” , while artists from Lebanon, Iran, Egypt, Israel and Syria will take part and the repertoire will include a Greek show, «6am: How to disappear completely» from team Blitz .
