Τhe 70th annual Festival of Avignon will take place from 6 to 24 June. The most important international institution for the performing arts, this year  focuses on politics and emphasizes on artists from the Middle East and female creators .

“How are we to live when politics is hopeless, disregarding  the future? How are we to live when ideas have no value and the social whole is torn, scared, silent? When the revolution is impossible, there remains the theater”, wonders  artistic director Olivier Py.More  political than ever, this year the festival focuses on creators from the Middle East while simultaneously manages female creators to cover one third of the total program. A significant  number of performances addresses the issue of  political incapacity  and the rise of populism and nationalism while this year’s poster of the festival, created by the Franco-Algerian artist Adel Abdessemed, depicts  a horse in  orange background at the moment it manages to break free from it’s  shackles  .

The festival will open  with  the performance of “The Cursed” by Flemish   Ivo van Hove.
