Increase in receipts and arrivals for Greek tourism
Travel receipts increased by 286.2% in May 2021, compared to the same month in 2020, while inbound travel traffic increased by 413.7% in May, according to the Travel Balance of the Bank of Greece.
The average expense this month per trip decreased by 26.0%.
In the 5 months January-May 2021, receipts decreased by 51.2% and arrivals by 65.5%.
In May 2021, as mentioned above, travel receipts increased by 286.2% compared to the corresponding month of 2020. More specifically, receipts from residents of EU-27 countries increased by 465.6%, which were formed in € 123 million, while receipts from residents of non-EU-27 countries increased by 95.7% (May 2021: € 43 million, May 2020: € 22 million). The increase in receipts from residents of EU-27 countries was a result of the increase in receipts from residents of euro area countries by 555.1% (May 2021: € 102 million, May 2020: € 16 million), as well as and receipts from residents of EU-27 countries outside the euro area by 241.8%, which amounted to 21 million euros.
Incoming travel traffic in May 2021 amounted to 285 thousand travelers, an increase of 413.7% compared to the corresponding month of 2020. In particular, travel traffic through airports increased significantly compared to May 2020, while that through border crossings increased by 35.2%. The increase in incoming travel traffic was a result of the increase in travel traffic both from EU-27 countries by 699.7% and from non-EU-27 countries by 166.5%. More specifically, travel traffic from the euro area countries amounted to 151 thousand travelers, showing an increase of 3,968.7%. Travel traffic from EU-27 countries outside the euro area also increased by 148.8%, reaching 55 thousand travelers.
