The inauguration of the Aegina Mosaic Exhibition will take place on Wednesday, August 7, 2019 at 8 pm at the Archaeological Museum of Aegina under the auspices of the Municipality of Aegina and in collaboration with the Ephorate of Antiquities of Piraeus and the Islands of the Ministry of Culture. Admission is free.

The event will feature a mosaic conservation and protection project in Aegina – which belonged to a 4th century AD synagogue and it is aimed at involving the local community. The protection and promotion of the mosaic adds another important monument to the island that will make a positive contribution to boosting tourism and the local economy.

Architect Elias Messinas, who along with his associates recently undertook the renovation of the central Monastery Synagogue in Thessaloniki, had previously undertaken the program of repairing the Veria synagogue on behalf of the Getty Grant Program. Elias Messinas, a graduate of Yale University, completed his doctoral dissertation at NTUA on the History and Architecture of Greek Synagogues with Professor George Sarigiannis, which was published in books, publications, and lectures in Greece.

Yvet Nahmia Messina is responsible for the donation campaign for the project and the creation of a group of friends from Greece and abroad who will support the project.

The program includes the maintenance of the mosaic floor and the creation of a new shelter for its protection, as well as its emergence with new inscriptions, lighting and environmental design.

The event is under the auspices of the Municipality of Aegina and the opening will be welcomed by the Mayor of Aegina Dimitris Mourtzis.
